Overview

Kato Drys is nestled in the southwestern region of Larnaca, Cyprus, surrounded by the villages of Pano Lefkara, Kato Lefkara, and Vavla. It sits at an average altitude of 520 meters above sea level. Kato Drys' name is rooted in two interpretations. The first suggests that the village drew its name from the multitude of "Dryes" (oak trees) that once flourished here. The second story tells of two villages in the past, Pano Drys and Kato Drys (Upper and Lower Drys), with a grand oak tree standing between them. Kato Drys' historical significance is noted during the Frankish rule, as it was documented as "Catodi." Kato Drys was honoured on the 1st of February 1997, due to the fact that on the back side of the Cyprus pound(Locally known as "lira"), it was Katodrys which was depicted, along with traditional products that were produced in Katodrys in the old days, like handicraft items, pottery and lace(known as "katodritiko"). Notable Figures: Kato Drys has been the birthplace of significant individuals. Saint Neofytos, born here in 1134, left a profound legacy. His country church is situated atop a village hill. Another beloved figure is Argyros Stakis, known as Reo Stakis, a prominent benefactor. Argyros Stakis, born in Kato Drys, devoted himself to the community, undertaking projects like water supply and the construction of the "Stakio" Health Centre and Community Buildings in 2000, further enriching the village's history and heritage.
